This show stopping dress is almost certainly from the Spring/Summer Thierry Mugler 1992 collection. An outstanding collector’s piece, this has all the iconic Mugler hallmarks rolled into one including the fabulous dagger shaped halter neck over-bodice made from a double thickness red matelassé cotton. The bodice is so beautifully made it almost has the appearance of a corset; however, it is belted in the middle with the trademark asymmetric Mugler belt buckle to define the waist. There are two faux front pockets to consolidate the look. The dress element which is underneath the over-bodice, is a medium weight crepe de chine in a low sweetheart neckline with a crossover pleated front and a low back. It fastens with poppers concealed on the waist-line and falls open to the front. With the dress being effectively a wrap over design, the skirt could reveal the leg in a seductive fashion if desired. This is a Thierry Mugler Blue Label couture piece - essentially very high end ready to wear and the workmanship is superb. We have inspected the dress very carefully and it is in virtually perfect vintage condition. We do not see any holes, rips, tears or stains. There is one tiny little mark on the back of the dress near the top of the waist band but this is hidden completely by the matelassé bodice.
1992 was a defining moment in Mugler’s career. For the first time he showed at the haute couture collections and was inducted into the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture and continued to show for the next decade. Early pieces from these pivotal collections are coveted worldwide by museums and collectors. If you look very carefully at look 56 in the runway show you will see the bodice of this dress paired with a different skirt. We have also shown a different look with a greatly exaggerated version of this dress to confirm our opinion of the collection attribution.
The dress is marked a French 40 and this equates to a UK 12 or US 8. Mugler clothing in general runs small and we suggest that this piece would be better suited to no bigger than a UK 10 or US 6.
